Region Information - Beaujolais
Gamay is one of the few French grape varieties that we do not see cultivated in every corner of the world. Winemakers around the globe seem happy to leave it to prosper on the granite-based soils of northern Beaujolais and the sandy; limestone soils to the south. There are ten crus of Beaujolais; from Julienas in the north to Brouilly in the south, passing through other well-known crus of Fleurie and Morgon. Each one has an individual style that the best growers explore and express, and like the Cote d'Or display the affects that terroir can have on a single grape.
Perhaps the most refreshing of all red wine styles with their terrific freshness and abundant fruit, the enjoyment of these wines is enhanced when served at a cool cellar temperature. These wines have undergone a deserved renaissance since the wonderful vintages of 1998 and 1999.
