Region Information - Alsace
The principle plank of the New World's current success is varietal labelling, and Alsace is where it all started. From varieties as a diverse as Muscat, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Gewurztraminer, Alsace produces wines with great class and purity.
Despite the clarity of varietal labelling, the greatest hindrance to customer confidence surrounds the question of residual sweetness. Wines range from dry to off-dry to honeyed and sweet, not to mention sparkling and it is often impossible to judge from the description, even from the label the sweetness of a wine.
These are tremendously versatile food wines too, complementing classic French, neighbouring German, to Thai and Chinese. A greatly underrated region.
