Despite its enduring image of tradition stability, much has changed in French wine since the middle of the last century. The classics remain the classics, but even in these regions change is palpable: Bordeaux re-calibrating to meet the needs of an international market, Burgundy leading the way in sustainable viticulture, for example. And the Rhone has provided more top-scoring 'Parker points' than any other region. Elsewhere in the country, land previously designated to the production of inexpensive domestic wines is at last giving up its secrets, with innovation and excellence abounding.
