Country Information - Chile
The fertile corridors of central Chile, cooled by the influence of the Humbolt current, were recognised as ideal wine producing regions back in the mid-19th Century. The transformation of vast areas of land into vineyards, along with the large amount of sunshine and intensive irrigation, has transformed Chile into one of the world's leading producers of good value wine.
Chilean wine is largely dominated by Bordeaux varieties due to the direct importing of cuttings from Bordeaux back in the mid-19th Century. Chile has remained Phylloxera free and therefore is one of the few sources of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc with original rootstocks.
The Chilean mentality of producing good value wine is demonstrated by Viña Doña Javiera, who's single varietal wines, under the Rio Claro label, represent excellent quality within their price range. Fine wine is also produced in this area of increased growth and popularity, with the prestigious estates of Arboleda and Seña creating a range of wines focused on highlighting the finest expression of varietal character aligned to refined nuances of Chilean terroir.
