Country Information - Australia

Most of Australia's wine styles are either very new, and therefore non-classic, or are clearly inspired by classics from traditional region. The country has an incredible variance, not just in style of wine, but also quality and cost. A great entry-level range is that of Tin Hat and Fantail - both are produced by the Roberts family wine business and have been crafted to deliver all the vibrancy of Australian fruit aligned to a sense of restraint.

Dominique Portet produces some stunning wines from Heathcote and Yarra Valley fruit, which are vinified along the classic lines with ageing in French oak and represent good value in the mid-priced range.

Henschke have built an outstanding reputation among contemporary winemakers and to enjoy their wines is quite simply to enjoy the best. Based in Barossa's Eden Valley and nearby Lenswood, their wines include the legendary Hill of Grace, where the oldest block was planted over 130 years ago, and Mount Edelstone, with its 70 year-old vines. The Henschke hand-made reds are full and rich with great colour intensity, dense fruit and silky vanilla oak. The whites, such as the Riesling and Semillon are stunningly alluring and display pristine fruit characters.

One of Australia's 'original' styles is their liqueur pudding wine - toffee-sweet, fortified wines, mostly made from Muscat. Chambers Rosewood Vineyards is one of the gatekeepers of this unique style of 'stickie', where the process of fortifying the partially fermented wine and then ageing it in cask results in a concentrated, powerful wine that is not cloying and has amazing balance.

The Australian bandwagon continues to roll with unstoppable momentum - buy and drink these wines with confidence, you'll not be disappointed.
