Country Information - Argentina

For many years Argentina has been one of the world's largest producers of wine, however, it has only been in recent years that it has been recognised as a large-scale producer of quality wines for the export market. Economic stability along with foreign investment into the wine industry have helped to encourage this reformation.

It is the Andes mountains that are Argentina's greatest wine growing asset, indeed it is purely due to altitude that Argentina can produce quality wines at all. As the climate changes with altitude conditions become suitable for a range of grape varieties. The Malbec grape, which was once a key constituent of many Bordeaux wines, flourishes at altitude where it can ripen under the intense sunlight, a fact demonstrated by the excellent Alta Vista range. Suitable conditions have also been developed for the more commercial Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grape varieties. The white variety Torrontes has also found its niche here and along with Chardonnay, allows Argentina to produce whites from the rich and oaky to the light, fresh and crisp. An exciting wine region worth watching closely and representing excellent value.
